Math:
We are using the Bridges Math Program. Students are immersed in engaging mathematical experiences to not only learn math skills, but to truly understand why and how a problem is solved. Students will learn and understand that there is more than one way to get to the same answer. Students are encouraged to find ways to solve problems that make the most sense to them. Students learn to persevere in solving problems. It is an exciting program!

Reading:
Our classroom uses many different reading strategies. We complete mini lessons that are linked to common core state standards. These mini lessons are found in the Benchmark Education Reading Series.
We also engage in a daily classroom read aloud. We can share and discuss a story experience as a whole class.
We often participate in small group activities. We share reading experiences together in these groups. Students will read and discuss short stories, novels, and fluency plays within these small groups. During this time I get to teach reading skills specific to these smaller sized groups!
We stay up on current events and informational text though the Scholastic News Magazine.
Students are given at least 15 minutes a day to silently read books of their choosing.
We complete a variety of projects to demonstrate understanding of what we read.
Writing:
We explore several different types of writing in fifth grade.
We following the story roller coaster and write our own novels.
Students write persuasive essays and present their essays to the class.
Students will research and report on a topic.
We also explore literary lingo and become proficient in the following: alliteration, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, metaphors and similes.
